The EA are pleased to announce that they have published the Tyre Pyrolysis Oil Resource Framework (TPORF).
This is the first new end‑of‑waste framework to be introduced since the original Quality Protocols were developed between 2004 and 2015. It represents a major step in giving industry clearer guidance and greater confidence in how tyre‑derived pyrolysis oil (TPO) can be used as a refinery feedstock. The framework was developed following a submission from the Renewable Transport Fuel Association (RTFA) and the establishment of a Technical Advisory Group in November 2023.
The framework explains the conditions under which TPO can be considered to have reached end‑of‑waste status. It sets out what waste inputs are acceptable, the treatment and process controls required, the environmental and human‑health considerations, the market assessment, and the technical requirements for using TPO in refineries — including its role in producing sustainable aviation fuel.
