It is the representative body of the Vehicle Salvage Industry. It was set up on 1 July 1998 and its members represent approximately 75% of the Vehicle Salvage Business in the UK.

The freedom for Salvage Companies to operate in the commercial environment is constantly being eroded with restrictions being placed on their business operations. Some changes represent sensible and practical controls but often proposals arise which can be a hindrance to future development and commercial success as well as a burden on companies. Proper and successful representations can only be made through a central representative body. The BVSF was set up to provide the means of achieving this objective by taking into account the views of its members and deploying them in the best possible way in discussions and negotiations with the relevant authorities. Concerted views of the industry can only be conveyed by a single representative body, particularly to Government and Insurers if successful results are to be achieved. The BVSF, by enforcing its Rules and Regulations helps to raise the status and standing of its members in the eyes of Government, European Commission, Police, Insurers etc. and assists in regulating the salvage market for the benefit of all who use its services.

To represent the common interests of independent salvage companies in negotiations with Insurers, Government, European Commission, Police and any other interested parties.

To regulate the salvage industry by ensuring compliance by its members with all legislation relevant to their business operations and with the provisions of the Code of Practice applicable to the handling of vehicle salvage.

The day to day work of BVSF is administered by a Secretary General, supported by a small team of staff, who acts as the voice of the industry in discussions affecting its members and who represents their interests on matters which arise of concern to the industry. It is also the role of the Secretary General to enforce the terms of the Rules and Regulations applicable to its members. The operation of the BVSF is overseen by a Management Committee appointed by the members. Running costs are carefully monitored and kept to a minimum.

Since its establishment, the BVSF has gained the respect of Government, Insurers, Police and many others who recognise the need for standards in the market. For example, the Police recommend the use of BVSF members for certain salvage work and some insurers require BVSF members only in their salvage contracts. BVSF has made many successful representations on proposals by Government and the EC which affect the operations of its members and has also negotiated improvements in the salvage Code of Practice. It has also established a full information service on important market developments and proposals for its members.

A current list of BVSF members appear on this site. All these companies have met the membership requirements which include evidence of EPA licences, the keeping of proper accounts, audit trail records, compliance with the Code of Practice etc. BVSF members are accepted as the leading salvage companies in the market because they comply with these membership requirements.
